Many different ways to view your story-virtual corkboard, binder, or even a more linear view.ĭifferent writing modes-so you can be distraction-free or have different drafts, notes, outlines, or profiles visible while you work.Ĭompile-honestly, the star feature that isn’t talked about as much as I think it should be! No more copying and pasting long documents. You can organize it however you want-long documents, many shorter documents, re-arrange the order things appear in the binder, etc. It just has that many features! You can keep your drafts, research, character profiles, worldbuilding, notes, resources, and anything else you need for your writing project in one convenient place-no more toggling through tons of windows trying to find that article you need to reference or that older draft of the scene you’re working on! A few of my other favorite features: If you’re not familiar with Scrivener, here’s the scoop: it’s robust writing software for writers of all kinds and has pretty much become the writing program every other writing program is stacked against. And since I spent so much time on it, I thought you might like to benefit from my work. I am trying the Save the Cat! Writes a Novel beat sheet on my current work-in-progress, so naturally, I spent two days getting a fancy Scrivener template worked up instead of, you know, writing. And for good reason! While I don’t agree that it’s the “last book on novel writing you’ll ever need” as the cover page tagline claims-it doesn’t cover a lot of topics that you need to know to be a good novelist, like world-building, how to write good dialogue, building tension, how to manage multiple plot lines, etc.-I do think it’s a very user-friendly guide to plotting a novel and has done the work to make itself relevant to writers of virtually all genres. It was published in 2018 and has since become the writing bible for every new and aspiring novelist in the land (or, at least it seems that way, sometimes!). If you are plugged into any type of novel writing community (on Instagram or elsewhere), you may have heard of the book Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody.
